BAND LEADER HONOURED AFTER REMEMBRANCE APPEAL CONCERTS
During a Rutland Concert Band performance for the Poppy Appeal in Oakham on
Saturday 9 November, the Royal British Legion presented the prestigious Alan Moutrey
Award to Musical Director Ian Halcrow in recognition of his enthusiastic support in fund
raising for the British Legion.
Named after Alan Moutrey, a former Rutland branch secretary of the RBL and an
enthusiastic volunteer, the trophy is awarded each year to a group or individual in recognition
of the work they do for the appeal. This year, the trophy was presented by the Rutland Branch
Chairman of the Royal British Legion, David Smith and received on behalf of the sixty band
members by Musical Director and co-founder of the Concert Band, Ian Halcrow. Mr Smith
explained to the audience that the award had been presented in recognition of over £3,000
raised on behalf of the Poppy Appeal during the last four remembrance concerts which are
performed each year in All Saint’s Church in Oakham. This years’ concert raised a further
£565.
Mr Halcrow, a former serviceman with a background in military bands himself, said:
“This award was a wonderful surprise. The band members are always very willing to support
the work of the British Legion with this annual event and we are extremely proud to be able
to help raise funds through our music.”
